The Web's 10 Most Influential People

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

When I first learned there was a list of the 10 most influential people on the Internet, I quickly scanned the included names for my own and was dismayed to find that despite my cunning insight and thoughtful analysis of the telecommunications industry, it was not enough to warrant a place on this impressive list.

Then again, if my small contribution was to be considered on par with the likes of Steve Jobs (News - Alert) and Jimmy Wales, I would second-guess the validity of the list and the sanity of its creator. Not to worry, however, as this list, found on the I Retire Early website, offers a quick glance at the true influential individuals of our time.

Mark Zuckerberg - In nearly every captured image of the Facebook (News - Alert) founder, he looks just like the little boy down the street - and not much older - but few could argue with the influence his social networking site has had on popular culture today. He has been listed by Forbes magazine as the youngest self-made billionaire with a personal wealth of $4 billion. Be on the lookout for The Social Network, a movie about his life set to release this year.

Sergey Brin, Larry Page and Eric Schmidt - Can you say Google? The combined wealth of the three men responsible for running the world's most visited search engine site is roughly $40 billion. Google owns the biggest ad network, acquired YouTube (News - Alert) in 2006 for $1.5 billion and even tried to get their hands on Facebook with no success. Google is easily considered to be the most powerful invention on the Web.

Michael Arrington - While his is not necessarily a household name, his influence has certainly been felt by many. The founder of TechCrunch was selected as one of the most influential people in the world by Time Magazine. Techcrunch was started as a blog, yet has become a Web publication for technology news. Arrington also developed an online payment company - Achex - which he later sold for $32 million.

Steve Jobs - In order to beat out Microsoft as the biggest tech company, Apple (News - Alert) needed a powerhouse and found it in Jobs. As co-founder and chief executive, Jobs is aggressive and demanding. Yet as the iPhone, iPod and iPad demonstrate, Apple is a force very few can recon with and win.

Matt Mullenweg - Not content to allow Blogspot to command all blogging space, Mullenweg developed Wordpress, the world's most used open source blogging platform. This young entrepreneur is also involved in public speaking. He developed a platform that runs many of the biggest names on the Web, including Techcrunch, Huffingtonpost, Mashable and more.

Jimmy Wales - As the man behind Wikipedia, Wales is an Internet entrepreneur and self made billionaire. Because of his ingenuity, we have access to some of the greatest information in the world - for free.

Arianna Huffington - The lone female on the list, Huffington has been the center of much controversy over the course of her career. Co-founder of the well-known news website, the Huffington Post, Huffington landed in the number 12 position in the Forbe's first premier list of the most influential women in media.

Craig Newmark - Internet advertising took a whole new twist when Newmark took the lead. His Craigslist website provides free online classified advertisement listings of products, services, jobs and discussion forums around the world. With more than 20 billion page views per month, Craigslist has made its place in the top 50 websites on the World Wide Web.

Evan Williams - Sometimes called the father of blogging, the CEO of Twitter has been a force in the World Wide Web for a number of years. One of his claims to fame is Pyra Labs, the creator of Weblog and Blogger Software.

Steve Ballmer (News - Alert) - CEO of Microsoft since 2000, Ballmer is one of the richest people on earth with an estimated worth of roughly $15 billion. He is responsible for all of Microsoft's activities throughout the world. He extraordinary different behavior and achievements allowed him to overpower Bill Gates, earning him top rank as one of the most influential people on the Internet.
