Nintendo Co Ltd's Wii game console outsold Sony Corp's PlayStation 3 nearly 4-to-1 in Japan in February. Compared with 89,131 units of the PS3, Nintendo sold 331,627 units of the Wii in the four weeks leading up to February 24.
With 1.33 million units sold, Nintendo's own "Super Smash Bros. Brawl" for the Wii became the best-selling software for the month in Japan. It is followed by the "Wii Fit" home fitness game, which sold 309,311 units in the four weeks. According to a report in Reuters, Microsoft (News - Alert) sold 14,079 Xbox 360 units. Momentum is on Nintendo's side for the time being, and any garnered by Sony during November of last year (thanks to titles like Dynasty Warriors 6) seems to have subsided.
The hit fitness game will be coming to the United States on May 19, Nintendo said last week. It will also debut with a motion sensing device, called the Wii Balance Board, which can monitor a players movement he does stretches, and other exercises. In the states, Wii ranked as the No. 1-selling game hardware in the month of Jan., moving 274,000 units. Sony held increased PS3 sales during the month of Jan. in the U.S., moving 269,000 units to outsell Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360.
One of the major reasons for Nintendo’s success in Japan is due to the company’s policy of offering easy-to-play and innovative games to expand the overall game population. While others such as Microsoft and Sony have been offering technological advances in their gaming consoles, Wii has been offering games based on Japanese culture.
To compete with Wii, Sony has announced that it will release a new Metal Gear SKU in late Q2 to include a 80GB PS3, DualShock 3 controller, and Metal Gear Solid 4 for $499.99.
