QVC First Multi-Media Retailer to Offer HD with SES AMERICOM

By Vinti Vaid, TMCnet Contributing Editor

SES (News - Alert) AMERICOM, a supplier of satellite services in the U.S, announced Monday that it will partner with the television home shopping company, QVC Inc., to meet the growing demand for high definition (HD) programming in the home retail shopping industry. QVC is the first home retail shopping channel to offer HD programming through SES AMERICOM’s (News - Alert) industry-leading HD-PRIME platform.

SES AMERICOM is an SES company. SES wholly owns three market-leading satellite operators, SES ASTRA in Europe, SES AMERICOM in North America, and SES NEW SKIES (News - Alert) which provides global coverage and connectivity to broadcasters, cable programmers, aeronautical and maritime communications integrators, internet service providers, mobile communications networks, government agencies, educational institutions, carriers and secure global data networks. It provides satellite communications solutions via a fleet of 38 satellites in 25 orbital positions around the globe. QVC will be relying on AMC-11, a satellite already delivering some of America's leading cable programs and reaching more than 80 million domestic households.

“As consumer demand for HD programming continues to increase, we offer broadcasters and cable operators the most robust, reliable and customizable HD offering for their customers,” said Bryan McGuirk, SES AMERICOM’s president of Media and Enterprise. “We are excited to collaborate with QVC, one of the most recognized brands in the consumer and broadcast markets, to help elevate and differentiate its brand through the first HD offering of any multimedia retailer.”

QVC (its name stands for "quality, value, and convenience") offers about 1,600 items each week to its home retail shopping customers. Merchandise includes apparel, cosmetics, electronics, houseware, jewelry, and toys. It broadcasts 24 hours a day and services orders from viewers through its six call centers. It also sells online and through five outlet stores plus a full-line store at the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota. The company also has shopping channels in Germany, Japan, and the UK. QVC is a subsidiary of Liberty Interactive Group, which is owned by Liberty Media.

“QVCHD is the next step in delivering our customers an enhanced shopping experience,” said Al Ulozas, QVC’s senior vice president of affiliate sales and marketing. “Through our relationship with SES AMERICOM, we are able to bring our products to life one step further – with crystal clear picture quality.”
