Google’s Android (News - Alert) 2.2’s newest app is eager to please. The app, “Voice Search with Voice Actions,” should probably have a cooler name worthy of its capabilities. But that appears to be its only drawback. The app enables smartphones to set reminders and alarms, take dictation for and send e-mails or texts, browse the Internet, get directions, or search for music. In essence, the phone does whatever you want it to.
Well, almost whatever you want it to. It doesn’t scratch your back or sing lullabies to you, for example.
But it can help feed you.
"Let's say I want to get some food at my favorite brunch place but I don't have the number," said Mike LeBeau, the head engineer for Voice Actions, in a promotional video. Now, the obvious answer is: SKIP BRUNCH. But LeBeau is a persistent little devil – he speaks the name of a Brooklyn bakery into his phone and it dials the number.
"Voice Actions uses the magic of Google (News - Alert) Maps to find businesses fast," LeBeau added.
And it can call other people to – like businesses and contacts. The app also sends texts and email, allows you to listen to music, browse the web, and complete common tasks – because you tell it to. Users can interact with a lot of different Android functionalities without having to mess around with awkwardly laid out keyboards.
Voice Actions is already available on the Motorola (News - Alert) Droid handset which just came out, and will likely spread like wildfire as more phones get the Android 2.2 upgrade over the next few weeks.
Versions of Voice Actions may soon be available for other phones, Google officials said. I wonder if this app will work on my new Blackberry Torch?
