Cisco (News - Alert) had announced end-of-sale and end-of-life dates of 2800 Series integrated services routers (ISRs) last year. Consequently, many owners of Cisco 2811 ISRs, particularly defense, federal civilian and commercial organizations, have been demanding a viable substitute or network upgrade solution that can not only help with mission continuity but also provide better routing performance and cost savings compared to the 2811 ISR.

In an effort to address this demand, TeleCommunication Systems (TCS), a mobile communication technology solution provider, announced shipping of its Impact TSR (News - Alert) network appliance, which is tailor-made to replace the Cisco 2811 ISR.

The new Impact TSR is a patent-pending single rack unit (1RU) network appliance featuring the latest routing and switching technology from Cisco, including the ESR 5915 router and ESS 2020 switch. This provides the appliance with increased port density and power over Ethernet (PoE) on all ports.

Designed to fit in the same rack unit space as the Cisco 2811, the new Impact TSR allows end users to easily replace the technology in their systems, thereby eliminating the need for additional rack space or integration complexity.

The new Impact TSR even eliminates the need for dedicated network appliances, as it is available with an integrated high-performance server option for virtualized environments. This helps users consolidate network appliances, such as WAN accelerators, directly into the TSR. This feature ultimately reduces operational costs, weight and power consumption.

The new Impact TSR is part of the company’s TotalCom portfolio, which encompasses highly secure communication solutions and end-to-end managed services for converged (IP-based) voice, video and data. These solutions aim to provide organizations with seamless and secure connectivity between fixed sites and remote operations.

Michael Bristol, president, Government Solutions Group, TCS, said in a statement, "TCS is committed to providing our customers with proven and secure communications solutions that incorporate the latest cutting-edge functionality, and the Impact TSR is the latest example of that commitment. Owners of the millions of Cisco 2811s in the marketplace can now contact either Cisco or TCS for a practical network upgrade solution that improves system performance and offers long-term cost savings."
