CEL course to help entrepreneurs move up a notch [New Straits Time (Malaysia)]

(New Straits Time (Malaysia) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) KUALA LUMPUR: University of Cambridge's Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning (CEL) is working with the Ministry of Higher Education to develop entrepreneurial skills among Malaysians.

The university is introducing its postgraduate diploma in entrepreneurship to budding Malaysian entrepreneurs to move up a notch.

The diploma is designed specifically for entrepreneurs to nurture their entrepreneurial ambitions and enable new ventures through an academically rigorous, directly relevant and highly practical learning experience.

CEL deputy director Dr Joanna Mills said Malaysians can study the course part-time via on-line, or by attending classes at the university.

According to Mills, there are 19 Malaysian entrepreneurship educators from several universities here like Universiti Malaya and Universiti Putra Malaysia which have embarked on the course.

Their aim is to study the course and develop entrepreneurship education within their respective universities, Mills said.

"So far, 13 have completed the course and seven more will finish theirs next year. The best people to teach entrepreneurship are entrepreneurs and obviously those who have studied the subject," she told Business Times.

Mills was in Kuala Lumpur recently to talk on "Is Entrepreneurship A Contact Sport", hosted by Universiti Tun Abdul Rahman.

She said majority of students who have completed the diploma course have either set up renewable energy companies, internet- based business, design firms, food, healthcare and education centres.

Cambridge had produced entrepreneurs like Hermann Hauser, well- known for setting up Acorn in 1978, and Dr Michael Richard Lynch, the founder of UK software giant Autonomy.

They are among UK's top entrepreneurs, who also included Sir Richard Branson of Virgin Airlines, Anthony Robbins, the world's number one peak performance coach, and Lord Allan Sugar, founder of Amstrad.

In Malaysia, well-known entrepreneurs include Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar al-Bukhary (MMC Corp), Tan Sri Tony Fernandes (AirAsia), Tan Sri Robert Kuok (Kuok Group), Tan Sri Ananda Krishnan (Astro), Datuk AK Nathan (Eversendai Corp), and Datuk Vijay Eswaran (QI Group).

"Entrepreneurship is not a solo activity... you have to interact with people," Mills said.
