UPMC has picked Alcatel-Lucent’s (News
- Alert) Nuage Networks software-defined networking (SDN) platform to be deployed as the health system’s backup network. UPMC is an integrated global health enterprise headquartered in Pittsburgh.
Bill Hanna, vice president of technical services at UPMC said, “UPMC carries critical medical information in our datacenters and across our network. To meet the demand from our growing community of users, and to ensure the most effective handling of critical information, we looked to eliminate static provisioning models and to strengthen our network capacity and flexibility across our datacenter networks.”
UPMC will now upgrade from its static provisioning models and deploy Nuage Networks virtualized services platform (VSP) and 7850 virtualized services gateway (VSG). They will start a multi-year transition to Nuage Networks solutions after staging and verification procedures. UPMC plans to transition its entire datacenter network infrastructure to cater to the demands of employees, patients, hospitals, and healthcare insurers.
The datacenter network virtualization and automation features of the Nuage Networks SDN solution will transform UPMC’s datacenters making it suitable to deliver cloud applications to numerous tenants in a policy-driven manner.
The Nuage Networks solution will include its virtualized services gateway or VSP which is a SDN solution that can automate datacenter networks to create slices for various tenants or users thereby saving a lot of time. The capabilities enable providers to define network services on a per-application basis, abstract the application requirements for network configuration, optimize workload placement across datacenter zones, and maximize the efficiency of server and fabric resources.
Sunil Khandekar, CEO of Nuage Networks noted, “We are pleased that our innovation can help UPMC reap the benefits of policy-driven network automation and deliver added value to its user groups. For UPMC, the Nuage solution eliminates manual provisioning and improves the flexibility of network assets while minimizing delay and human error.”
Nuage is helping UPMC to fully virtualize and automate its network infrastructure covering distributed datacenters in order to deliver instant, secure connectivity to the different user groups.
