When China Mobile (News - Alert), which has a subscriber base of about 835 million, decides to do anything, it can be described as monumental in scope. The company is undergoing somewhat of a transformation as it adopts software defined networking (SDN) to open a new era of public cloud so it can increase the speed of deployments of new products and services and lower its operating costs. China Mobile (CMCC) announced it has selected Nuage Networks to build a solution that would be responsive to the type of scale that is needed in the Chinese market in which massive deployments are the norm when next-generation communications services become available.
Nuage Networks from Nokia specializes in providing solutions for cloud service providers and large enterprises by delivering and managing large, multi-tenant clouds, and, according to the company, delivering on the promise of the cloud.
For a company the size of China Mobile, the public cloud solution it wants to deploy will require the capability Nuage provides in managing large multitenant clouds. CMCC has chosen the Nuage Virtualized Services Platform (VSP) for its first commercial public cloud project based on SDN technology.
With Nuage Networks’ VSP, CMCC will be able to provide next generation communications services with more features to its customers by virtualizing its multitenant data center networks and establishing connectivity with computing resources. This capability gives CMCC the technology it needs to implement new data centers up to 10 times faster than with physical deployments, which will lower operating costs by up to 50 percent.
Yu Xiaohan, Head of Customer Business Team, CMCC at Nokia (News - Alert) Networks China said, “The successful track record of Nuage Networks' VSP in major operators' clouds around the world, and our philosophy of building open cloud environments that avoid customer lock-in, were both instrumental in our ability to win China Mobile's first open bid for its datacenter SDN.”
The Nuage Networks VSP solution provides large enterprises and service providers with SDN and policy-based automation for cloud deployments. It can support clouds of all sizes and architecture, including some of the largest clouds in the world. Organizations can use it as a virtual overlay network platform for existing virtual and physical server and network resources with an open SDN and SD-WAN avoiding vendor lock-in. And best of all, it is designed to support all of the major virtualization and cloud management platforms. This includes Docker containers, as well as traditional virtual machines such as OpenStack and CloudStack.
By leveraging SDN and the Nuage Networks VSP to deploy the 2,000 public cloud environment, China Mobile will have the infrastructure to bring next generation communications services to its 835 million subscribers without delay and with greater reliability.
