Ecrio (News - Alert), a supplier of 4G/LTE real time communications client software, recently announced that it has been granted a patent for its unique and innovative technique of distributing Rich Communications Services (RCS) functions across application and modem processors with a single IP Multimedia Subsystem (News - Alert) (IMS) stack. The USPTO issued patent US 9,152,478 last Friday for this method, known by the company as FlexIMS.
Ecrio’s IP-based RCS solution enables IMS-based core functions such as VoLTE, ViLTE and multimedia IP messaging as well as compatibility with legacy SMS and MMS systems without the need for dedicated IMS stacks. This newly-patented method adds value to existing messaging technology so it’s more comparable to over-the-top (OTT) services and therefore more appealing to mobile users with a longer feature list and enhanced user experience. Furthermore, these services can continue to improve as the RCS ecosystem evolves and are available equally on smartphones and other devices such as tablets, PCs and CPEs.
The most necessary IMS components — such as signaling, authorization, session routing and setup — have been directly integrated into the RCS solution so that these IMS-based services can be offered without the need for underlying architecture. FlexIMS supports cloud, private cloud and turnkey deployments and includes provision of in-demand features that help operators stay relevant with changing times and ensure the loyalty of their customers. These in-demand communication tools consist of IP-based calling, group messaging, real-time file exchange, a converged inbox for SMS, MMS and RCS messages, multi-device support and archiving and forwarding of messages and files.
“We are pleased that the USPTO recognized our FlexIMS architecture as a uniquely differentiated technology,” commented Michel Gannage, Founder and CEO of Ecrio. “Enriched calling and messaging capabilities built on a single IMS stack is ideal for RCS Clients applicable across the spectrum of envisioned device types.”
FlexIMS helps operators drastically reduce costs while maintaining more fluid technological organization by doing away with IMS stack fragmentation, which in turn shortens the time it takes to roll out new features for the market and significantly lowers power consumption. The agile nature of the solution is well-suited to rolling out new technologies as they are developed and ensuring customers are provided with the most holistic communications capabilities possible. With the acquisition of this new patent, Ecrio will have a firm grasp on the RCS field for some time to come.
