Metaswitch Drives Cloud Message with Classic PBX Campaign

Traditional PBXs are on the way out, says Metaswitch Networks. But while they may soon be gone, the company says it wants to make sure they’re not forgotten.

So Metaswitch has launched the website, which discusses the demise of the classic PBX (News - Alert) and invites folks to submit photos and memories of these warhorses.

“We are trying to create a photographic record of these relentless laborers, before they disappear completely. Consumed by the cloud,” reads the new website from Metaswitch, which has a new campaign about how the mobile boom will elevate organizations to VoIP and the cloud.

“The PBX is going to a better place,” according to the site, which calls the Lucent Definity, Nortel Meridian, NEC NEAX, Toshiba Strata, Siemens Hicom, Fujitsu 9600 ES, Ericsson (News - Alert) MD-100, and Alcatel 440 “legends” and “titans of TDM.”

People who submit photos or stories of their experiences with such PBX products will be invited to download a book called Silver Linings: Nursery Rhymes for Cloudy Times, in which Metaswitch staff present their takes on classic children’s poems.

Here’s a sample:

  • Little Bo Peep has lost her sleep
  • Over TDM cable pollution.
  • Get rid of it all, and make the call
  • To switch to a hosted solution

This new website and book are just the most recent efforts by Metaswitch to promote the benefits of moving to cloud-based IP telephony solutions. As covered by TMCnet, the company recently launched what its hosted business social campaign with the unveiling of an infographic that provides research emphasizing the key role that mobility is playing in businesses’ move to IP communications.

Metaswitch addresses the mobility angle by offering business users the ability to take a call from their business line from any mobile phone or business laptop with a soft client. This is not a find me/follow me feature; rather, it’s a capability that brings a user’s actual extension and all the features of that extension to his or her mobile devices. Outbound calls from those devices present the user’s business phone number as opposed to his or her cell phone number.
