lifted the curtain on the new BCMG 1000 and its IP Powered Business and IP Powered Home solutions at SuperComm (News - Alert).
The BCMG (Border Control Media Gateway) 1000 is an IP-to-IP session aware media gateway, aimed at service providers, which leverages Nortel’s (News - Alert) IPR and patents to improve voice quality and security. It provides end-to-end SIP interoperability between legacy, NGN and IMS terminals, traffic policing and marking, and delivers an even greater number of secure connections. The BCMG 1000 enhances the company’s “Transit and Multimedia Interconnect” solution and supports service providers’ ability to:
- Tackle challenges with multi-access IP network convergence by using transcoding and media adaption techniques to allow subscribers to communicate with anyone over IP, regardless of the other user's device or media type;
- Improve voice quality by eliminating echoes, background noise and other impairments;
- Provide security measures to block hackers and other malicious use, such as denial of service attacks, spoofing, service theft, fraud and eavesdropping;
- Enable more deployment flexibility because it is a Linux-based, hardware-independent solution and it can interoperate with any standards-compliant Call Server, Softswitch, SIP application server and/or network media node;
- Reduce operational expenses by eliminating the need to upgrade or replace older legacy CPE because the solution enables the connectivity to support evolving network and managing an IP-IP media gateway and a session border controller simultaneously while cost effectively support both functions in one.
“As VoIP and multimedia solutions and applications have become more widely deployed, service providers need help addressing IP media impairments that have become more prevalent in their multi-access networks,” reports Jeremy Duke, founder and principal analyst for Synergy (News - Alert) Research. “This creates an emerging market for session aware media gateways like Nortel’s BCMG 1000, which helps service providers to deliver communications across multiple IP networks and improve network quality, security and reliability.”
Nortel’s “Carrier VoIP and Application Solutions” -- an IP-powered business voice and multimedia solution, helps carrier-hosted business line their services with advanced voice and multimedia, unified communications, web meetings and mobility services. The new hosted contact center features integrate such services that can be delivered to business over IP or support a mix of IP and legacy equipment.
The new features offer several benefits to service providers, including increased revenue potential, customer loyalty and satisfaction; and the ability to offer ‘one-stop-shopping’ bundled services to their business subscribers. CVAS eliminates the need for clients to hire or replace high-priced IT expertise. It also provides business continuity in the event of site disasters or epidemics as the contact center capabilities can be moved quickly and customer service agents can work from any location.
The solution equips service providers to offer:
- SIP-based ACD capability that helps to improve customer service and response rate by allowing businesses to rapidly distribute calls to the most appropriate agent, based on skills and availability. Businesses can examine agent success and response rate and make adjustments as needed;
- SIP Hunt Groups that allow businesses to ensure that important calls do not go unanswered because the system automatically hunts around for an available agent;
- SIP Attendant Console which allows a contact center attendant to answer and transfer calls using simple “drag and drop” buttons on their call center console.
With Nortel’s carrier-hosted solution, service providers can offer advanced contact center features to small and medium-size businesses that these businesses previously could not afford. Service providers can also help large businesses cut costs by outsourcing the contact center communications equipment and buying the communications as a service from their service providers.

Nortel’s IP Powered Home consumer voice and multimedia solution equips service providers to compete more effectively and significantly improve the way people communicate by providing advanced SIP features. These include personalized call routing, call screening and fixed-mobile convergence integrated into carrier subscriber portals.
Nortel’s consumer solution allow subscribers to be contacted via one number for all of their phones and devices without having to change their phone number or ask their friends and family to update their address books. Subscribers can also program their devices to identify callers by setting unique ring tones and “announce” the incoming caller by specifying which phone should ring based on the caller and their location. For example, if the subscriber is at home when the call comes in, they can program the network to ring the landline instead of the mobile device, which allows the user to offload mobile minutes to their landline.
