Mercedes-Benz Selects I.D. Systems to Deploy Wireless Industrial Vehicle Management Technology

By Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Mercedes-Benz U.S. International has placed a purchase order with I.D. Systems products for its PowerFleet VMS. I.D. Systems is a provider of wireless Vehicle Management Systems (VMS). The order was placed by I.D. Systems' strategic marketing partner NACCO Materials Handling Group.

In this economy, the automotive industry is looking to increase financial performance with the introduction of modern technologies. With wireless vehicle management system, the automotive companies can get more productivity, cost savings and profitability out of their fleets of industrial vehicles. With the help of Vehicle Management Systems, a company can introduce access control which creates accountability by restricting vehicle use to authorized operators.

Mercedes-Benz can now improve its supply chain productivity as the company can now implement accountability for the use of equipment. It can also provide unique metrics on equipment utilization apart from streamlining material handling work flow. A wireless VMS also provides other features such as reduction in fleet maintenance costs, scheduling maintenance according to actual vehicle usage, and reporting vehicle problems electronically.

“It is extremely gratifying to add Mercedes-Benz to our world-class customer base,'' said Peter Fausel, I.D. Systems' executive vice president of sales, marketing and customer service. “We view Daimler as a global leader in adopting best-practice technology to streamline manufacturing operations, and we believe Mercedes' investment in I.D. Systems' VMS technology is a reflection of its exceptional value -- particularly during difficult economic conditions.”

Mercedes-Benz U.S. International is a subsidiary of Stuttgart, Germany-based Daimler AG. Daimler is the largest manufacturer of heavy- and medium-duty trucks in the world and the company produces premium passenger cars for its global customers.

Apart from Mercedes-Benz, the products of the company have been also chosen by American Eagle Airlines. The Airlines has selected I.D. Systems' AvRamp Wireless Vehicle Management System (VMS) to manage a fleet of aircraft ground support equipment (GSE) at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. The AvRamp system provides a range of safety, security and operational management functions for airport vehicles.
