Novatel Networks Deploys VoltDB's High-Speed Operational Database
As an International carrier, Novatel processes millions of calls per day, from robocalls for elections to customer support calls for the Affordable Health Care Act. It even terminates and originates domestic and International call traffic through bilateral agreements between its own and other carrier networks.
With the earlier MySQL database, it was quiet challenging for Novatel to manage extreme velocity data streams and call volumes. Consequently, Novatel replaced its legacy MySQL system with another high speed operational NewSQL database from VoltDB in its data center.
VoltDB offers operational database that can deliver high-speed data processing and real-time, in-memory analytics in a single database system. The relational database facilitates organizations with unique abilities to build ultra-fast applications that can extract insights from massive volumes of dynamic data and enable real-time decision-making.
With the deployment of VoltDB’s relational database, Novatel will now be able to perform carrier-grade VoIP call routing.
For routing VoIP calls, enterprises uses Session Initiation Protocol (News - Alert) (SIP) call routing as the common protocol. In addition, SIP is designed to set up real-time multimedia sessions between groups of participants and can be used for video and audio multicast meetings.
The VoltDB is queried to return least-cost SIP call routing results based on the number dialed after going through a procedure to determine the least costly route, said the company. This machine-to-machine activity results in millions of transactions and in turn will enable high-velocity data ingestion, transactional capabilities and scale that is required to make routing decisions in real time based on very complex incoming data.
All these features of VoltDB database allow Novatel to pick the lowest cost carrier and route calls tens of thousands of times per second, thereby experiencing increased efficiency.
"Our system was initially architected with MySQL, which presented a major operational burden and offered limited scale," said Ari Gorman, chief technology officer, Novatel Networks, in a statement. "VoltDB is a fault tolerant database that enables us to manage extreme velocity data streams and call volumes. We are getting incredible performance with VoltDB that isn't possible with more traditional systems. As a result, we are able to deliver a remarkably competitive on premise and Cloud-based, high-capacity SIP solution."
