Portugal Telecom reportedly has selected Critical Links’ VoIP solution for the Portuguese Ministry of Education’s initiative to execute a so-called “Digital School” modernization effort.
Critical Links’ (News - Alert) “edgeBOX” has been chosen to support the “Schools Local Area Networks Initiative” in 1,220 Portuguese schools, according to the companies. The edgeBOX provides a full-featured IP-PBX (News - Alert) and VoiP gateway for offices with 10 to 300 users.
The education ministry says it searched for solution providers that could help them deliver Ethernet and Wi-Fi local area networks, network services and network management to all high schools in Portugal. The Portugal Telecom (News - Alert)-led consortium was chosen for the first phase of a government program that aims to provide Portuguese schools a wide range of communications and IT services such as e-learning.
Portugal Telecom, a global telecommunications operator, has a strong position in the Portuguese market and serves about 35 million domestic and international clients. The company has operations in Brazil and sub-Saharan Africa and according to a recent report, this diversity is helping them ride out the financial crisis that’s challenging European telcos now.
Noting that his company’s solution was picked by Portugal Telecom following a highly competitive bid, João Carreira, chief executive officer at Critical Links, said that schools worldwide have realized a sophisticated IT and Telecom infrastructure can provide an enriching learning environment. However, they don’t want to spend a huge amount of money to support such an infrastructure.
According to Carreira, the edgeBOX – pictured right – addresses this need by providing the functionality at the lowest price point while offering high scalability and flexibility. In addition, the solution also offers education specific edgePACKs, which are value-added applications for a learning environment that are integrated with other functions.
Critical Links is a global provider of converged voice, data and IT solutions for small and medium businesses. The company’s edgeBOX multi-service business gateway solution recently won an INTERNET TELEPHONY Excellence Award presented by INTERNET TELEPHONY magazine. The solution was recognized for its outstanding contribution to IP communications.
