Orange Rounds Out VoIP, VPN, WiFi Portfolio with Wireless Products

By Vivek Naik, TMCnet Contributor

Orange Business Services reportedly is poised to announce the availability of two new wireless products, Air Quick Start and Air Back-up, at the GSMA Mobile World Congress (News - Alert) 2009 in Barcelona, Spain.

Air Quick Start is a cellular-enabled router and Air Back-up is a 3G mobile WiFi (News - Alert) Access point. Officials at Orange say they’re confident that the products complete the portfolio of offerings to customers keen on dealing with a single vendor for comprehensive and integrated IP, VoIP, Virtual Private Network, and WiFi via IP accessible solutions and services.
Previously, and until this release, IP VPN customers approached third-party vendors to provide solutions for mobile leverage via the Internet. This approach caused delays due to evaluating, negotiating and finalizing sometimes unavoidable complex usage plans. Micro level infrastructural clutter in the form of unplanned wiring and obtrusive access points also caused concern. Additionally, equipment compatibility, trial runs, installation and final acceptance caused further delays which were not very encouraging from a business perspective. The issue is exacerbated if the connectivity required is only temporary.
Orange claims that its two new options, being plug-and-play devices, significantly cut down time to connect. Orange has ready to use plans in place for customers to quickly switch between temporary and permanent 3G solutions.
Deployment is planned in a phased manner. The United States, Canada and some parts of Western Europe are the early gainers with solutions ready by February end, 2009. Central and North European countries benefit by the end of June, 2009. All other customers are targeted during the second half of 2009.
Orange assesses that it now has “a fully managed, all inclusive, international service to significantly reduce connection times and, when a disruption occurs, downtimes to the Orange IP VPN,” said Hervé Kauffmann, senior vice president of global communications solutions at Orange Business Services (News - Alert).
The company appears to have given current and future trend indication due consideration, while planning for these products. Users and service providers worldwide are using broadband more and more, as reported by TMC (News - Alert). They are looking for mobile solutions that can access and work with this available resource, now and in the future.
