EU clears Intel, McAfee deal under conditions

By Associated Press ,

BRUSSELS (AP) — European Union regulators say they have cleared Intel's (News - Alert) takeover of McAfee after the chipmaker committed to allowing its products to also work with software from other computer security companies.

The European Commission said Wednesday that the fact that Intel could embed McAfee's (News - Alert) security programs in its own chips had threatened to lock other players out of the market.

Computer security has become a lucrative business in an age of computer viruses.

The $7.68 billion takeover of McAfee is the biggest deal in Intel's history and had already been cleared by U.S. regulators.
