Bond denied for Augsuta man accused in motel fatal shooting
May 10, 2013 (The Augusta Chronicle - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
An Augusta man accused of killing a woman two weeks ago must await possible indictment and trial in jail.
Jabali Howard, 29, was denied bond Friday in Richmond County Superior Court. He is accused of murder, aggravated assault and weapon violations in the April 30 shooting death of 23-year-old Courtney Bell.
Assistant District Attorney Garon Muller said Friday that sheriff investigators have surveillance camera video and eye-witness accounts at the Red Carpet Inn on the Gordon Highway that Howard argued with Bell before pulling a handgun and firing several shots at her. Bell was killed by a gunshot wound to her head.
Howard is on probation in connection with three different, unrelated assault convictions. His probation officer has repeatedly filed probation violation warrants against Howard, who was returned to probation instead of being sent to prison to complete his sentences. A new warrant was filed April 30.
In September 2010, Chief Judge J. Carlisle Overstreet sentenced Howard to one year in jail and five years probation. According to the indictment, he allegedly punched a sheriff's deputy in the face and hit an Augusta man and his underage son.
In December 2011, Judge Sheryl B. Jolly sentenced Howard to one year in jail followed by four years probation. According to the indictment, he was accused of trying to rob a man and pistol whipping him.
And in October, Judge James G. Blanchard Jr. sentenced Howard to one year probation for misdemeanor battery. According to the indictment, Howard allegedly hit a man with a tire iron.
