Specializing in open source technology and the Linux platform, The Linux Box Corporation unveiled a community edition of its first commercial software product, Enkive Community Edition (Enkive CE), which is an advanced business e-mail archiving, retrieval and reporting system. As an innovative and comprehensive open source solution, Enkive Community Edition addresses the challenges posed by e-mail retention required for organization’s business intelligence, as well as checks compliance with legal and regulatory.

Organizations can leverage the unique solution to retain control over their e-mail system, IT infrastructure, information and processes.

In a press release, Elizabeth Ziph, president and CEO of The Linux Box, said, “Organizations of all sizes are increasingly using e-mail as their main form of communication, but many are not treating internal and external e-mail correspondence as critical corporate records. The need to have easy access to a secure e-mail archive is more useful than and just as important as being compliant with laws and regulations governing communications.” According to Ziph, employees' work product as well as their customer interaction record is based on email and hence needs to be retained.

An industry analyst firm, Osterman Research, recently issued a white paper ‘What Are Your Obligations to Retain Email and Other Electronic Content?’ that provides deep insights into the legal, regulatory and business management issues surrounding e-mail archiving.

In a statement, Michael Osterman, president of Osterman Research, said, “e-mail storage is growing at 25 percent annually and is being driven by the increasing use of email and larger attachments sent through email, which creates enormous problems for IT administrators who must devote more time and resources to storage management. This creates longer backup windows, longer restores after a server crash and a greater proportion of IT budget devoted to storage, all of which can be addressed through the use of archiving.”

E-mails are captured as and when they are sent or received by Enkive ensuring storage before they can be destroyed. De-duplication of redundant e-mails results in reduced storage with the searches conducted on the attachments, as well as the e-mail bodies. By providing easy search and recovery option for e-mails, Enkive helps organizations address compliance issues with laws and regulations. Enkive CE is free to download with the Enkive Enterprise Edition (Enkive EE) likely to be available in the first half of 2011.
