Toshiba Introduces IPedge Linux-based IP System

June 17, 2011

Toshiba (News - Alert) has launched IPedge, a new single server IP telephony system that complements the company’s existing Strata CIX converged telephony platform, but offers Toshiba customers an IP-only platform delivered on a single Linux-based server that runs multiple applications on one server. Call processing, voicemail and centralized management are built-in and part of the standard software, while unified messaging and UC client software reside on the system and are license-activated.

Also, Toshiba plans to release an updated version of IPedge software later this summer that will include the company’s “Meeting” audio and Web conferencing application as another license-activated application. (Initially, the Meeting application will run on a dedicated server connected to IPedge.) Contact center applications can be incorporated optionally for IPedge such as ACD and Taske reporting which require Toshiba’s Media Application Server.

Toshiba reports that customers involved in beta testing gave positive feedback, particularly about the central management, built-in voicemail, simple licensing for unified messaging and WAV (News - Alert) files for Music on Hold.

IPedge is available in three models (1U footprint) for varying capacities similar to Toshiba’s earlier Strata CIX offer. All versions can be enclosed in a Toshiba red locking case for protection and to eliminate the risk of unintended button pushing if the server is located in a data center closet or IT area along with other equipment.

Models include:

  • IPedge EM for 1,000 users per server, with dual hard drive and dual power supplies
  • IPedge EC for 200 users per server
  • IPedge EP for 40 users per server (due out later in the summer of 2011)

Customers can take advantage of Toshiba’s IP5000-Series phones, including eight different models, with varying characteristics for particular business needs as follows:

Models with a 10/100Mbps Ethernet port:

  • IP5522-SD (4-line display without backlight, 10 programmable buttons)
  • IP5622-SD (4-line display with backlight, 10 programmable buttons)
  • IP5631-SDL (9-line backlit display, 10 programmable buttons (20 buttons using shift key), integrated Web browser)

Models with a built-in Gigabit Ethernet switch for high speed network connections:

  • IP5022-SD (4-line display without backlight, 10 programmable buttons)
  • IP5122-SD / SDC (4-line display, with/without backlight, 10 programmable buttons with/without local CO line interface for local calls or emergency dialing)
  • IP5131-SDL (9-line backlit display, 10 programmable buttons (20 buttons using shift key), integrated Web browser)
  • IP5132-SD (4-line backlit display, 20 programmable buttons)

Toshiba stresses that the new IP-only system will be offered in parallel with the company’s current Strata CIX converged system that supports both IP and TDM devices. Toshiba recognizes that SMBs (particularly those with fewer than 100 users) still purchase lower cost digital telephones and will do so for several years to come. For this reason, Toshiba intends to continue to develop enhancements for the Strata CIX which can be part of a network of IPedge and Strata CIX systems should customers wish to deploy IPedge at some of their locations. Both systems are fully compatible and have similar features sets, though the actual software streams are different. Toshiba also plans to introduce packaged applications for IPedge that will make it easy and less expensive for customers to purchase.

Toshiba IPedge is shipping as of June 14, 2011 in North America. Existing Strata CIX customers can upgrade by replacing the hardware and software, while retaining all IP end user devices (digital phones are not compatible) and most applications, or they can network to the new system.
