It's easy to forget about Australia sometimes, since it's an island unto itself in many ways. This country is every bit as advanced as its European counterparts, however, and means there's a lot going on in communications in this region. Recently, Telstra—one of the biggest names in Australian communications—got together with BroadSoft (News - Alert) to offer some significant advances in the region's unified communications (UC) operations.

The new move, a multi-year strategic agreement, calls for Telstra (News - Alert) to bring in several major BroadSoft components to drive Telstra's overall UC offerings. Telstra will be turning to BroadSoft Business to drive Telstra's IP Telephony (TIPT) system, which offers a complete managed cloud service providing voice and video connectivity, along with presence, mobility and collaboration tools.

Additionally, BroadSoft Business will have a presence in Telstra's Digital Office Technology (DOT) and session initiation protocol (SIP) Connect systems. With DOT, businesses—particularly the small to medium-sized business market—get access to a complete mobile, landline and broadband solution that allows for IP calling all in an on-premise package. SIP Connect, meanwhile, allows those with a heavy investment in legacy systems to continue using these, at least somewhat, and move toward a complete voice and data service in the meantime.

This makes BroadSoft Business a powerful new addition to the company's lineup, and gives a complete slate of cloud-based UC tools in one package. Comprised of UC-One, CC-One and Team-One, and built under BroadSoft Hub for contextual intelligence, the end result is the kind of complete slate that can give an Australian Internet service provider (ISP) access to a complete lineup of UC tools.

BroadSoft managing director for the Asia-Pacific region Jonathan Reid commented, “As Australia’s largest telecommunications provider, Telstra plays a critical role in driving world-leading technologies and services throughout the country. We share a very similar view of how Unified Communications (News - Alert) will transform the market in the years ahead and drive workplace productivity. We look forward to working closely with Telstra’s team to accelerate their success and leadership in the Australian Unified Communications market with the deployment of BroadSoft Business.”

UC's value in the field is unquestioned at this point; it's hard to even make a case against having UC tools in place thanks to the sheer depth of value these can deliver. Having access to voice and video conferencing tools delivers bottom-line impact thanks to cost savings in travel expenses; throw in the squishier value prompted by collaboration—it's often there but much harder to quantify since it relates directly to expanded efforts and potential impact on sales—and the picture only brightens.

There's a lot of value to be generated from this new connection, and BroadSoft and Telstra will likely make some real hay while this sun shines.
