Bharti Airtel Launches VoIP, Broadband and Entertainment Triple Play Service

By Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributor

With its new Airtel digital TV interactive, Bharti Airtel reportedly is finally bringing Triple Play (News - Alert) service to its customers in India – IP telephony, broadband and Entertainment.

The DTH network has taken off in a big way in India. After Zee television started it decades ago, other players such as Tata Sky, Sun Direct and Reliance BigTV entered the market, offering variety of programs to the potentially huge Indian market. Airtel (News - Alert) is the latest entrant in the digital TV services arena.

Airtel claims says it provides advanced IPTV (News - Alert) Headend, with MPEG4-10 compression technology. This will allow the users to more content and better quality images, and lets them get services such as broadcast television; network based time-shifted TV, real video-on-demand and a host of other interactive services.

Atul Bindal, President-Telemedia Services at Bharti Airtel (News - Alert), said, “Today, with the launch of Airtel digital TV interactive, we begin offering the Triple Play Advantage offer to our customers. We offer our customers a Single Knock on The Door experience – a uniform Airtel Quality of Experience with a single Customer Service interface and a single unified bill for voice, broadband and TV and video entertainment.”

Airtel customers will get the IPTV service through a fiber backbone of Carrier Ethernet Network with last mile delivery on copper using ADSL2+ technology, as well as Interactive 2.0, Time Shift TV, and the largest expanding library of movies on Movie on Demand.

As TMCnet reported, the company recently deployed a Comverse SMS Router network to optimize network performance, handle short message service text messaging traffic, and enable introduction of new and advanced SMS-related services. The solution uses Airtel’s existing SMS infrastructure to provide higher quality of service to our customers and provides the company ample capacity and flexibility to address future needs.
