TCS Earns U.S. Patent for Encrypting VoIP Traffic

By Jai C.S., TMCnet Contributor

TeleCommunication Systems, Inc, a provider of wireless communications technology, recently disclosed that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has issued patent number for its “Encapsulation of Secure Encrypted Data In A Deployable, Secure Communication System Allowing Benign, Secure Commercial Transport.”

Translation: a means for sending sensitive encrypted data securely over public IP networks.

The USPTO is a federal agency that focuses in promoting technological advancement by providing incentives to invent, invest in, and disclose new technology worldwide. The agency does this by issuing patents.

The TSI (News - Alert) patent is describes a method and apparatus whereby VoIP traffic can be cloaked by encrypting the data using a Type 1 encryption unit.

As mentioned, the encrypted data is then encapsulated into IP packets and transmitted over a tunnel between IP encapsulation devices on a public IP network. The IP packets can be transmitted over a satellite terminal.

“Both government and private users may have a need for sending secure communications when travelling or in remote areas,” said Drew Morin (News - Alert), senior vice president and chief technical officer for TCS. “TCS’ invention allows the transmission of secure information even when the only communications link is a public non-secure system such as the Internet. TCS uses the invention in many of the SwiftLink systems that are used by government and enterprises.”

Deployable communication systems such as satellite terminals or laptop computers can transmit encrypted data by having only an Internet connection. TCS’ invention enables voice, video and data to be transmitted through cloaking techniques that do not rely on having a secure data communications system.
