Times seem to be hard everywhere these days. One company that is really feeling it is HTC (News - Alert). Unfortunately, a dwindling market share for HTC smartphones has led to the company’s first ever quarterly loss. In addition, HTC also saw a 54 percent decline in its share price this year.
Samsung (News - Alert) has been the thorn in HTC’s side. This has made the laid back, mostly hands-off HTC chairwoman and co-founder, Cher Wang, take a much more proactive approach to her company. Normally she has left the management of the company up to the two men that she appointed as company president.
All this has changed since August. What was her normal two day visit to the office is now four days a week. This is according to Ben Ho, who is HTC’s chief marketing officer. Yesterday, October 22, 2013 Wang held a town hall type meeting which lasted about 90 minutes.
This meeting was an effort to rally the staff. It was also used as a forum to let everyone know that president and CEO, Peter Chou would continue to remain in charge as the boss. It was Chou’s suggestion for Wang to become more involved with the day-to-day operations.
All of this leads us to a possible smartwatch coming from HTC. There is talk that such a device is in development. The word is that an HTC smartwatch would use Google’s Android (News - Alert) software and come equipped with a camera.
This information comes to use from a “person familiar with the matter.” According to Bloomberg News, HTC doesn’t comment on rumors or speculation. However, Chou told the Financial Times (News - Alert) a couple of days ago that the company did some work on an intelligent watch with Microsoft.
In this article, Chou went on to mention that the current high-tech wristwatches are just “gimmick” experiences. “It has to meet a need, otherwise if it’s just a gimmick or concept it’s not for people’s day-to-day lives.”
If a smartwatch is in the works, it will not see the light of day until sometime in the latter half of 2014. Since it is a rumor at this time, there is no set release date or pricing information available. This is not the only potentially new product.
Wang hinted that a tablet might be in the works as well. She said, "When the HTC tablet comes out it will be something nice and disruptive." This is clearly an indication that there are ideas filling the company's collective mind. It looks like 2014 will bring us some new ideas and concepts from HTC
