The Impact of Wearable Tech in Sports

The global sports industry is worth hundreds of billions of dollars with everyone from peewee leagues, high schools, colleges, amateur leagues, weekend warriors and professionals spending money on sports gear, nutrition and training. The latest technology being embraced by the sports industry is wearable technology. According to Juniper Research (News - Alert), it has forecast the wearable devices market will grow to $19 billion by 2018, as everyone from amateurs to professionals implement this technology to monitor performance and use the data generated from these devices to prevent injuries and improve training methodologies as well as introduce new ways in which audiences can become part of sporting events.

While consumers have been using products like Fitbit and smart watches from different manufacturers in combination with their smartphones to monitor biofeedback and their level of activity throughout the day, professional sports organizations have integrated wearable technologies to do much more than that.

Wearable technology is being incorporated into virtually every piece of equipment professional athletes use in order to monitor not only the performance, but also their safety. This includes sensors in the helmets of NFL players so a concussion can be detected when it happens, so the athlete can be removed from the field to prevent further injuries. On the other hand Major League Baseball has been testing smart compression shirts that have been wired to measure arm movement and technique to determine a pitcher’s effectiveness.

Companies such as Catapult Sports, maker of wearable sensors, provides end-to-end solutions for hundreds of professional sports organizations around the world by including the analytics involved in processing the data, which increasingly is becoming a critical component of this technology.

Although the industry is barely getting off the ground, it is advancing at a very fast rate and individual consumers and professionals need to find sources for finding the best information to keep pace in wearable technology, mobile platforms, sensors, real-time biometrics and athletic performance data.
