Top 5 Dating Apps for Newbies

You’ve probably heard some success stories (and some not so successful ones) about friends who have tried online dating. If you’ve been curious about it but still haven’t filled out that profile, now is the best time to get started. Now finding a date and maybe even falling in love is as easy as downloading an app.

Smartphone apps for whatever kind of relationship you’re looking for

You might be surprised at just how many people are using dating sites and apps. A recent study found that online dating is the second most common way for people to get together, and more and more people are signing up for online dating services each and every day. If you’re ready to get started, here are some apps to try out:

Tinder: If you’re looking for the current trend in online dating, it’s Tinder. The app makes it easy to connect your Facebook (News - Alert) profile to your Tinder and from there you can browse other profiles and decide whether you’re interested or not. If there’s mutual interest, you’ll get a notification and can start messaging back and forth.

Match: Match is easily one of the largest, longest-running online dating sites, and about 40% of the activity on Match happens over their mobile app. The app is available to paid subscribers, but it’s well worth it to have access to their 15 million users from your phone.

PlentyOfFish: The POF app is great if you know exactly what you’re looking for. While other services let you search profiles by location, POF lets you choose from filters like education and height. It’s easy to find what you’re looking for and with 2 million daily users in the U.S. alone, there are plenty of people to choose from.

Let’s Date: If you want a dating app that feels more like social media, the Let’s Date app is a good choice. The layout looks a lot like Instagram with more options for interacting. Once you create a free profile, the app matches you up with compatible users. Then, you can simply look through pictures and quick descriptions and immediately get a feel for the person.

How About We: This app is the perfect icebreaker. With your free profile, you can find other people in your area and set up meet and greets and fun events with each other. It’s a low-pressure way to meet people online and then actually take the step to meeting them in real life.

Between online dating sites and smartphone apps, there are a lot of tools out there to help you meet people and even find some romance. Get to know people, let them surprise you, make friends, and have fun.

As you start to intertwine your love life and your online presence, be careful of what information you’re putting out there (remember that you’re giving personal information out to strangers) and use the services in a safe way. A lot of people will use online dating sites and social media to check up on exes, for example, which isn’t always the healthiest thing to do. Protect yourself and your feelings in any dating situation and you’ll have a lot of fun meeting interesting people.

If you’re nervous about getting into online dating, remember that getting to know someone new can be a little awkward no matter the circumstances. Try to avoid online dating advice beforehand, or at least take advice with a grain of salt. Just be honest with yourself about what you want and be honest with whoever you meet and know that over the years online dating has become a norm that has led to many great relationships.
