Facebook Suffers Second Short Outage of the Year

Facebook’s recent outage shows that even the biggest and the baddest websites on the Internet are in danger of going down from time to time. The website suffered a major International outage late last week that even affected Facebook (News - Alert) plugins that were actually part of other websites. The website is hardly the first major web company to see some problems with connectivity from time to time, but it’s one of the first times that the social media giant has gone down for any real length of time since it rose to its current status.

Facebook eventually did clear up the confusion about what the problem was and why the site went down. Whenever a site with the status of Facebook does go offline, there are going to be some people who think that it went down because it was taken down. Facebook has tried to make it clear that the outage was not the work of hackers or anything malicious like that. It was probably a fairly good move to make sure that the site was not hacked after another major company, in AOL had announced it had been overridden by hackers and spammers a few months ago.

Facebook contacted a couple of different tech websites to shed light on the outage, saying:

“Late last night, we ran into an issue while updating the configuration of one of our software systems. Not long after we made the change, some people started to have trouble accessing Facebook. We quickly spotted and fixed the problem, and in less than 30 minutes Facebook was back to 100% for everyone. This doesn’t happen often, but when it does we make sure we learn from the experience so we can make Facebook that much more reliable. Nothing is more important to us than making sure Facebook is there when people need it, and we apologize to anyone who may have had trouble connecting last night.”

In total, the hubbub surrounding the outage lasted longer than when Facebook was actually down. The site was offline for about half an hour. This is the second time this year the site has had a short outage. It also went offline for a shorter period of time in May.
