There’s no doubt that Netflix is doing everything it can in order to become more popular and reach more eyes. One of the big ways the company has managed to do that is by continuing to work on its original content. While most of its original content has come in the form of series, it just inked comedian Adam Sandler to a four picture deal.
It seems pretty obvious why Netflix would do this, as they are always looking for new ways to knock off more traditional studios. Sandler, according to a recent statement that came along with announcement of the deal said he agreed to terms with Netflix, “for one reason and one reason only. Netflix rhymes with Wet Chicks. Let the streaming begin!!!!”
Neither Sandler or Netflix has released any kind of financial information, though it said the comedic actor makes about $15 million per picture with traditional studios. If there is an eyebrow raising moment here, it’s that Netlfix would choose Adam Sandler to be the first to strike this kind of accord with. While he was one of Hollywood’s hottest funny men about a decade ago, his popularity has tailed off.
In 2013, Forbes called Sandler the most overpaid actor in Hollywood. The publication said that for every dollar Sandler was paid for his last three movies, the studios only got an average of $3.40 back.
It should be pointed out that people were originally quite down on Netflix when it first announced original content. Then the company rolled out Orange (News - Alert) is the New Black and House of Cards. Since those series premiered, some companies like Amazon.com have attempted to follow in Netflix’s footsteps with limited success. While movies are different than multi-episode series, critics might want to hold their negative comments until they see what Netflix does with this deal.
